Mayotte, an island territory facing major energy challenges, is characterized by high electricity production costs and a dependence on fossil fuels exceeding 95 %. However, thanks to the commitment of innovative players like Akuo Energy, the island is embarking on a sustainable energy transition, combining economic development with respect for the environment.
An innovative approach for a unique territory
Akuo Energy is an integrated producer of renewable energies, recognized for its innovative and unique approach. The company deploys solutions adapted to local constraints, notably through agrivoltaics and energy storage. These innovations respond to the specific challenges of Mayotte: limited land space, exceptional biodiversity and rapid growth in energy consumption.
Akuo's Agrivoltaics: technology at the farmer's service
A pioneer in agrivoltaics for over 15 years, Akuo develops projects combining solar energy and agriculture, putting farmers at the heart of its initiatives. Market gardeners, arboriculturists, livestock farmers and cereal growers benefit from tailored technical solutions, transforming solar power plants into genuine agricultural production tools. This approach not only generates clean energy, but also strengthens local food sovereignty.
Two structuring projects for the future
In 2022, Akuo Energy will give concrete expression to its commitment to Mayotte with the construction of two major infrastructures
LESPORT
located in Ironi Bé, is the island's first photovoltaic greenhouse project. With a solar capacity of 1.3 MWp and a 3 MWh storage battery, the greenhouses not only produce green electricity, but also protect local crops from bad weather, pests and maki and dogfish theft, thereby contributing to the island's agricultural development.
HAMAHA
based in Mamoudzou, is exploiting a former landfill site that is no longer suitable for construction, to install a 1.2 MWp solar power plant coupled with a 2.5 MWh battery. This project not only enables the rehabilitation of a degraded site, but also the injection of electricity at times of high demand, particularly in the evening.
A lasting commitment to serving Mayotte
Akuo Energy promotes a decentralized, sustainable energy model, combining innovation with a positive impact on local communities. In Mayotte, the company is proving that renewable energy production and agricultural development can go hand in hand.
"For a long time, renewable energies were called alternative energies, often with a certain condescension. Today, we can say loud and clear that there is no alternative to renewable energies."
Chairman and co-founder of Akuo
Thanks to these initiatives, Akuo Energy is establishing itself as a key player in Mayotte's energy and agricultural development, demonstrating that the synergies between innovation and the region are promising for the future.
