Agricultural sector in Mayotte : A fertile territory for your investments
Exceptional agricultural potential
Located in the heart of the Indian Ocean, Mayotte enjoys a favorable tropical climate and fertile soils, ideal for the development of diversified, sustainable agriculture. The territory has 4,315 farms covering almost 6,000 hectares, representing 65 % of the agricultural population and 80 % of cultivated land (source: Recensement Agricole 2020, AGRESTE).
The dominant agricultural model is the mahorais garden (90 % of the UAA), a form of mixed farming integrated with an agroforestry plant cover. A variety of products are grown: bananas, manioc, pineapples, mangoes, coconuts, breadfruit, turmeric, jackfruit, etc.
80 % of farms are micro-farms averaging 1.4 ha.
A developing livestock sector
Nearly 30 % of farmers raise livestock, mainly cattle (69 % of farmers, 73 % of livestock), followed by sheep/goats and poultry. Mauritian agriculture is showing stable to moderate growth (+0 to +5 %), offering real potential for structuring and modernization.
